Pride WA Since we broke the story of Pride's financial challenges a couple of weeks ago, there has been plenty of discussion in the community about the future of Pride and its major events.  I am hoping that the current Committee will arrive at the SGM and be able to announce that they have turned everything around.  However, with Pride now seriously in the red, we would be foolish not to be thinking of a Plan B.  Here are my thoughts.

Anthony Callea in Rent There was a huge buzz about the opening night of Rent at the Regal Theatre in Subi, not the least among an army of teenage girls who turned out to see Anthony Callea. Obviously coming out has done nothing to dent his popularity. Take note Hollywood.

Northbridge FestivalGAYinWA is flying the rainbow flag at this weekend's Northbridge Festival and, I have to say, I couldn't think of a better way to spend a weekend than enjoying all the fringe arts and festivities of, what has probably become, Northbridge's biggest weekend of the year.

Pride Parade The decision taken by what is left of the 2007 Pride Committee to stage a Special General Meeting to discuss Pride WA's current financial crisis with the organisation's members is the right decision and committee members should be applauded for tackling the issue head on.   Let us hope this new spirit of consultation is not too late.

Kevin Rudd When Kyle "scoop" Sandilands today uncovered Labor's long standing opposition to gay marriage, I heard just as many of my gay friends decry Kevin Rudd as being as homophobic as Howard as I heard say, "who wants that straight person's institution, anyway?"

Buttboy & Tigger - Pride Festival 2008Rebuilding trust was the key to the success of this year's Pride events according to festival convenor, Kieran Bycroft. While some events did less well than expected, many attracted good crowds and some film and theatre sessions were sold out.

Anti-Proposition 8 signAfrican-American and Latino voters were a powerful force in electing Barack Obama and also in passing Proposition 8 to ban same-sex marriage. Exit polls showed 70 percent of black voters, and a majority of Latino voters, voted yes to the ban. More here.

Same-sex marriage bansThree US states passed amendments banning same-sex marriage in the historic vote that also saw the election of the nation's first black president. Proposition 8 supporterHaving failed to save same-sex marriage, GLBT Californians are taking their fight to court. City attorneys from San Francisco, Los Angeles and Santa Clara will seek to invalidate Proposition 8 on the grounds that it conflicts with the equal protection pillars of the state Constitution. Circumcision HIV benefits in doubt

CircumcisionUS analysis of data on 53,567 men who have sex with other men has found that circumcision is ineffective in reducing HIV rates. African trials have shown circumcision cuts the likelihood of male to female HIV transmission by up to 60 per cent. More here and here.

Big HIV rise among China's gay men

ChinaHIV infections have increased alarmingly among gay and bisexual men in parts of China according to new data. There were an estimated 700,000 HIV/AIDS cases in China as of October 2007, up 8 percent from 2006. Cases among gay and bisexual men jumped to 3.3 percent in 2007 from 0.4 percent in 2005.
