The members of Pride WA have given the beleaguered organisation two months in which to turn around its financial position or be wound up.
Following this year's annual festival the board announced that it had made a loss of $36,000. In a heated and often emotional Special General Meeting this week, the five remaining committee members from 2007 revealed the loss had grown to $51,000, but told those in attendance that they were determined to preserve the organisation.
Discussion centred around a number of issues including community support for Pride, membership levels, the viability of fundraising options, and whether the organisation was technically insolvent.
After lengthy debate, former co-president Daniel Smith moved a motion to establish processes for attempting to turn Pride's financial position around. The motion also put in place a process to wind up the organisation at a Special General Meeting in February and investigate alternative ways of staging Fairday and the Parade, unless the committee was able to turn the situation around.
Mr Smith moved that "the committee convene a Special General Meeting for Sunday 17 February 2008 and include a special resolution to wind the organisation up; that a subcommittee be formed to enter into discussions with other LGBTIQ organisations in Australia to discuss the best way to stage Fairday and Parade and other Pride events into the future; that subcommittees be formed as appropriate to investigate organisational structure, sponsorship, fundraising and membership initiatives and that all of these subcommittees report back at the SGM; and that the committee seek to negotiate with its creditors to reduce amounts owing and report back on the success of these negotiations at the SGM."
The motion was seconded by another former co-president, John Gangell, and was carried without dissent. No alternative motions were moved or foreshadowed.
In moving the resolution, Mr Smith said that every opportunity to save the organisation should be explored, but the priority should be to ensure Fairday and the Parade continue.
"While we all have strong attachment to Pride the organisation, Pride is its events and there would be no point saving Pride, only to find it didn't have the capacity to stage Fairday and the Parade," he said after the SGM.
"Everybody wants to save Pride, however, if the current Pride entity has to be sacrificed to ensure Pride's events continue, then we have to be open to this.
"Should we come up with a workable plan, then Pride will continue and we will all be thrilled. However, if we can't, work will have already been undertaken to investigate alternative ways of ensuring there is both a Fairday and a Parade next year."
Co-President Dean Cahill told GAYinWA he was reasonably happy with the outcome of the SGM and the existing committee members were determined to preserve Pride in its current form.
"I understand and respect the concerns the members expressed, but this committee is going to do our damndest to make sure there's a plenty of money in Pride's account and that the motion to wind up does not come to fruition," he said.
"We are getting together this weekend to work on fundraising and will be putting our heads down and getting straight into it right after New Year."
The committee has scheduled a fundraising event at the Court Hotel on Saturday 29 December and outlined plans at the meeting for a number of other events. Pride Treasurer Iosefo Tapusoa also foreshadowed the likely securing of a major corporate sponsor.
The 2008 Pride Parade may have been among the smallest, and certainly
the fastest in Pride's 19 years, but it remains a relevant and
important event according to this year's convenor, Charles Denham.
Gay favourite Rachel Berger is among the headliners this year as the Wild West Comedy Fest returns
to Perth for 26 days of hilarity and hijinks. Other Australian comedy
stars on the bill include Bob Franklin, Tom Gleeson, Fiona O’Loughlin
and Scared Little Weird
Guys.
Rebuilding trust was the key to the success of this year's Pride events
according to festival convenor, Kieran Bycroft. While some events did
less well than expected, many attracted good crowds and some film and
theatre sessions were sold out.
African-American and Latino voters were a powerful force in electing Barack Obama and also in passing Proposition 8 to ban same-sex marriage. Exit polls
showed 70 percent of black voters, and a majority of Latino
voters, voted yes to the ban. More here.

Three US states passed amendments banning same-sex marriage in the historic vote that also saw the election of the nation's first black president. Voters in California, Arizona and Florida approved proposals to outlaw same-sex

Having failed to save same-sex marriage, GLBT Californians are taking their fight to court. City attorneys from San Francisco, Los Angeles and Santa Clara will seek to invalidate Proposition 8 on the grounds that it conflicts with the equal

US analysis of data on 53,567 men who have sex with other men has
found that circumcision is ineffective in reducing HIV rates.

HIV infections have increased alarmingly among gay and bisexual men in parts of
China according to new data. There were an estimated 700,000 HIV/AIDS cases in China as of
October 2007, up 8 percent from 2006. Cases among gay and bisexual men jumped to 3.3 percent in 2007 from 0.4 percent in 2005. More here.

While I may not be the first person to go out on a limb and declare
that Barack Obama will win this year's Presidential election, I may be
among the first to declare that Sarah Palin will win the Republican
nomination and challenge him in 2012. That is, if she hasn't

The global financial meltdown and impending economic Armageddon may
have an unexpected upside. For the first time in half a generation,
there may finally be a pool of people with the time on their
hands necessary to build exciting Parade floats.
